Born in Nashville, I never stayed inside the lines. My kindergarten teachers didn't get it, so I didn't share art in pre-school anymore.
In college, after majoring in Art History with a minor in studio art (U. of AL, Vanderbilt), I decided to tackle the real world as part-time interior designer, full-time real estate agent, and travel consultant.
Finally, I regained my shattered, post-coloring book self-confidence and enrolled in a watercolor class in Nashville in 1986. Three years of realistic watercolor painting later, I left to study with the most well - known abstract expressionist teacher I could find. Anton Weiss, of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, educated at the Villach Institute of Art and Museums, had emigrated to the U.S. and moved o Nashville. Anton had been director of Watkins Institute, where I took drawing classes. Before moving to Tennessee, Anton studied under the critical eye of Jerry Farnsworth of the Art Students League in NYC and painted under Hans Hofmann, arguably one of the finest teachers of abstraction of the 20th century.
I showed up at Anton's studio for my first workshop carrying a "finished" piece I had been commissioned to do by a well-known N.Y. writer. Anton took one look at it and said, "Technically, I have no problem with this, but where is the emotion?" I was in for a wild rides over the next 4 years. It ended with acceptance in several juried competitions and a solo gallery show that sold out. A gallery in Scottsdale followed and more juried competitive shows, more classes and workshops throughout the country. My period of study ended in 1994 at the end of spring semester at Belmont College, where I had been studying acrylic painting on canvas for several semesters.
Today, I enjoy working in acrylic because they allow me to layer and build up paints in a gestural and expressive manner. What I feel in beauty of nature I combine with my background in the elements of abstraction.
I am a full-time resident of Crested Butte. There's no place like home.
