Our History
1920’s - Sydney Lucas arrived in New York City via Paris and founded “The Paris Etching Society” and Camilla Lucas Publishing company. During his career, Sydney published thousands of images.
He brought art into the homes of people at all levels of income through his etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions. The various subjects included Redouté and Prevost Flowers, Barraband and Gould Birds, Piranesi, French Landscapes, Urban Scenes, Women, Children, Animals, Hunting and much more.
1950’s – Fascinated by the extensive history of the print world, Phyllis Lucas owned and operated one of the most successful antique print galleries in mid-town Manhattan for almost 50 years.
1960’s – Sydney and Phyllis
Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed, limited edition lithographs by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. They worked directly with Mr. Dali over several years and the three created such fine images that in 1985, the Lucas’ Collection of limited edition lithographs from Salvador Dali’s paintings were displayed alongside his original paintings at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
1970’s – Lucille Lucas moved west after falling in love with the wide-open skies and beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Settling in the historic old mining town, turned ski town, of Crested Butte, Colorado. As an artist with a background and education in Printmaking, Lucille carried on the family tradition and opened one of the first fine art galleries in Crested Butte. She is listed in the Davenport’s Art Reference and Price Guide.
1990’s – After adventuring all over the world, Lucille moved over 200,000 of the prints from New York to Crested Butte. She again continued the family tradition and reopened the Lucille Lucas Gallery to house a great collection of contemporary Crested Butte and Rocky Mountain artists and photographers, the extensive collection of prints from the 15th Century to Present, and the Sydney and Phyllis Lucas published Dali Lithographs.
